Today’s project is a DIY reclaimed wood sign, perfect for the front porch or entryway!  I was looking at my pile of scraps and before I knew it, I had this sign.  It works up quickly and gives the look of chalkboard, using Chalky Finish Paint from DecoArt.

Welcome Cut File

I used the font “Always in my Heart”.  You can click the thumbnail for the full resolution version and print it for transferring the image to wood like in the tutorial linked above, or use it to make a stencil on your Cricut or other die cut machine.  I used Cricut and SCAL software.

To finish the frame, I went with Natural Oak Wood Finishing Cloths from Minwax.  These things are so awesome.  One step finishes and seals.  Yay!

This color is subtle and natural.  I generally run from the word oak when it comes to stain color, but I like this one.

When the stain dried, I sealed with Clear Creme Wax from DecoArt.  You see the darker wax in this picture, but I ended up not using it because I was satisfied with the look after applying the clear wax.  The sign looked aged enough on its own!

DIY $45 Five Piece Outdoor Adirondack Furniture Set

There is nothing quite like relaxing in a nice adirondack chair on a gorgeous day.  That is why I decided to tackle this DIY Adirondack Chair Woodworking Plan from Ana White for Home Depot.  Once we finished the chairs, we had to have the DIY Footstools to go with them!  For the table, I loosely based the design on this DIY side table I shared with you in the fall.  I had to wing it some to make the scrap wood I had on hand work for the project and I love its rustic look.  Read on to see how I finished my 5 piece set using my new paint line obsession; Chalky Finish Paint From DecoArt Americana Home Decor.

DIY Outdoor Furniture Woodworking plan

Let’s talk about the table first.  Check out the above link for the plan details.  This wood was super rustic and scrappy, so I wanted the paint to be as well.  I went for “Cameo” color from DecoArt Chalky Finish line.  LOVE.  It looks kinda coral, kinda barn red, 100% lovely.

I love that you have to do zero prep with this paint.  Even if you are painting an already finished surface, no sanding, no priming… just go for it, and have a gorgeous outcome.

How to use Chalk Paint

I recommend painting the individual table to slats before attaching them.  It is easier to get to the sides and bottom when they are individual.  You can still countersink your screws, fill the holes in with wood putty, sand away the excess and paint over just that area to touch it up after attaching.How to seal outdoor furniture

Since this project will live outdoors, my first choice of finish (Clear Creme Wax and Aging Wax) isn’t recommended since it won’t stand up to the harsh elements over time.  That’s why we sealed the entire set of furniture with Americana Decor Soft-Touch Varnish, two coats!  It is approved for outdoor use, and we want our pieces to last a long time.

Adirondack Chair Woodworking Plan

On page 5 of the Adirondack chair plan from Ana and Home Depot (linked in the first paragraph), the red circled area says 1/2 inch, which is totally not what it means to say.  That measurement should be 1 1/2 inch, like it says in the text below the diagram.  If you are a visual kinda builder, and don’t read the text (like me), you will be super frustrated.  Let’s just say that these chairs almost didn’t happen!  Finally dear husband realized the typo and the rest of the build went smoothly.

DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint Timeless

I had already painted Cameo on the chairs before deciding to go with Timeless.  We just went over the red with the cream and one coat did it!

The other point I want to make sure I share is that using scrap cuts from your local hardware store cuts the price of this project way down, like more than in half.  We went to Menards where they had 1×4 and 2×4 in various lengths from 12-36 inches from cuts they had made in store, for just $0.49 each!!  This is less than half of what it would have cost to buy full length boards and cut them at home.  Just take a tape measurer with you, your cut list and be ready to inspect and dig through the scrap stock.  It is totally worth it!

I found the outdoor pillows at Menards, and don’t they look like they were made for this set?!?!  I was planning to make my own, but come on.

Dollar Tree Pallet Wood Bathroom Organizer Tutorial

Could you stand to be a little more organized in your bathroom?  I know I could.  I find organizing rather boring, unless I can combine it with creating a cool home decor accent.  Today I am sharing a project fitting that bill- a rustic, chalkboard reclaimed pallet wood bathroom organizer using cute little jars I scored at the Dollar Tree recently!  For only $3 and some supplies I had on hand, this project packs a big punch on the cheap.  You can totally make this.  Give it to Mom for Mother’s Day!

SUPPLIES:

How to make wood pallet bathroom organizer

Pallet wood plank about 15 inches

Amazing Goop or E6000

Saw tooth hanger

Hammer

3 Dollar Tree Jars

Chalkboard Paint

Small Paint Brush

Tape Measurer

Marker or pencil

TUTORIAL:

Begin by hammering the sawtooth hanger in the middle upper back of the wood.  You want to do this before gluing the jars in place.

How to attach jars to wood with Amazing Goop

Measure placement for the jars and mark three evenly space dots on the front of your board with pencil or marker.  This board already had 3 evenly space holes drilled for a project that never happened.  Apply a generous dot of Amazing Goop on the board on the marked spots and on the jars in the middle back.  Let this sit for 2-10 minutes, then place jars, holding gentle pressure on each for about 1 minute.  Let this cure for a couple of hours before the next step.

How to make wood pallet art

Paint the indented area with Chalkboard paint.  This took several light coats, drying 15 minutes between each.

Wood Pallet Burlap Monogram Sign DIY

Today I am going to show you how to make a rustic monogram sign using recycled pallets and burlap!  This would be perfect on a front door, as mantel decor or wall art.  Not only that, but it is an eco-friendly way to decorate your house on the cheap.

TUTORIAL:

I showed you how to make a wood pallet sign using a Kreg Jig in this DIY Pallet Sign Tutorial.  Kreg makes joining wood slats super easy.  I LOVE IT.

Once your sign is created, stain it with your choice of color.  My favorite way to stain these days is Minwax Wood Finishing Cloths.  Stain and seal in one step with an easy swipe.

How to make a Monogram Reclaimed Wood Pallet Sign

I used my cricut to make a stencil with a design I created in Photoshop.  The software I use to connect my Cricut and my laptop is Sure Cuts Alot, but I am pretty sure that is no longer available.  Cricut has software for this purpose, which I have not used.

Use Chalky Finish Paint and Burlap DIY Sign

I used sticky back paper for my stencil so it would stick to the Burlap.  I prepared the burlap with Stiffy fabric stiffening spray so that it wouldn’t fray when I cut it.

Dollar Store Craft Three Dollar Wall Art DIY

I am so excited to share with you this great Dollar Tree wall art project that you can make for $3!  I found some adorable spring/summer print gift bags on my most recent trip there and decided to bring them home and make barn wood frames from scrap wood for them. While there, I also grabbed the coordinating navy blue planter, knowing I would put the DIY Paper Daisies I showed you last spring in there to go with the daisy on one of the cute gift bags.  Once I got the three bags framed, I decided there needed to be text on the chevron backgrounds, so I cut out “Oh Glorious Day” using my Cricut.  You can get the cut file too!

I measured the bags to see how big to make my frames.  I decided I wanted the opening to be 9×10 inches.

 

How to Cut Wood With Table Saw

I shared an Ana White Barnwood Frame Plan in this DIY Barnwood Frame Tutorial with Free Printables.  For this project, I wanted different dimensions and learned a couple of tricks I want to share along the way.  I wanted to use 1×2 inch boards, but didn’t have enough of that dimension on hand, so I ripped 1×4 scraps with my table saw by setting the guide arm at 1.5 inches (which is the actual width of a 1×2 board).  I

How to cut with Miter Saw

Next I set my miter saw to 45º and cut one end of my homemade 1×2.

How to cut Mitered Corners for frame

I measured from the short inner point of the angle 9 inches over and cut the other side going the opposite direction (so I moved my miter saw 45º to the left).

How to Make a Barnwood Frame

I lined the inner frame up with 1×2 flipped up on its side to know where to make the 45º cuts for the outer frame.  This was easier and quicker than measuring!  I used 2 paint stirrers to give me the thickness for attaching the inner frame to the outer so that the back of the frame would be recessed for my foam mounted gift bags (foam mounting happens after the frames are made, see below).

Ryobi Air Strike Nailer For Joining Inner and Outter Frame

Use wood glue at the join and clamp the inner and outer frame together.  Nail in place with 2 inch nails.  Did I ever tell you I love this Ryobi AirStrike cordless nailer?  I do.  It is a go to tool for me.  So easy to use, CORDLESS, goodbye hammer and nails.

Mount Picture on Foam Board

Cut foam board to fit in the back of the recessed frame.  Cut the desired image area off of the gift bag and adhere it to the foam board with Super 77 or other mounting adhesive.

Smooth out Wrinkles with Hand

Smooth wrinkles from the center out with your hand.

Paint Frame With Chalk Paint

Paint frame with color of choice.  I used white chalk paint and antiqued the edges with  FolkArt Antiquing Medium .  I sealed with Krylon Clear Coat Matte Finish because it was nice outside and I was excited that I could use spray sealer after such a long winter!  Wax or varnish would be fine too.

Put Image in Barnwood Frame

Since the foam board is cut to the same dimensions as the recess in the back of the frame, the picture pretty much fits and stays.  I used clear packing tape to secure it in place.

I used Coordinations adhesive cardstock in yellow and my Cricut with SCAL software to cut out the text, which I created in Photoshop (“oh” is “Always in My Heart” font and “GLORIOUS DAY” is Ostrich Sans Black).  Since the paper was adhesive I just peeled off the letters and put them on the chevron patterned framed backgrounds like you see in the photo.  You could use the cut file to make a stencil and paint the letters on, or print them in your favorite color and cut them out by hand too.

I love Proverbs 31 and I think verse 28 is perfect for mothers as a reminder of how much she should be cherished and appreciated! Of course it would make a great DIY project, so I headed to the thrift store and picked up this picture:

It’s the perfect size and the back already has a hanger!

How to DIY a Sign

Materials:

Second hand sign (thrift store, garage sale, etc.)

Sanding block

Spray paint

Die Cut Machine (I used the Cricut Explore)

Adhesive vinyl / Transfer paper

Step 1: This picture is actually a sticker, so I wet the whole thing and peeled it off with a scraper. After it was dry I went over it with a sanding block.

Step 2: Spray it in the color of your choice; I went with gloss black.

Step 3: Create the verse on the cutting machine, cut it out, and adhere it to the painted wood (for instructions on how to do that click here). Instead of peeling the lettering and painting, I just kept the white vinyl on there.

Step 4: Go over the whole piece with the sanding block, carefully! This step is optional but it will reduce some of the gloss (if you used gloss paint) and give it an overall ‘worn’ look.

Since the hardware is already on, all you have to do is wrap it up in pretty paper and give it to the Mom in your life!

Play around with the fonts on your machine and choose the one that you like the best. I wanted my sign to be simple, so I went with cursive. I think I will make a few more so I can pass them out to friends, back to the thrift store I go!

Furniture Makeover Chalk Paint a Goodwill Chair

I decided one day to take a little trip to the local goodwill and see if I could find any good finds. Guess what?  I always find something I just think I can’t live without and this time around it was no different. I found a beautiful banker’s chair just waiting for me to take home! I did not even think about it twice and just drove it home.

 How to paint a piece of furniture with Chalk Paint

Once it was home I had to decide what I wanted to do with it. I did not want to spray paint. I choose to do my home made chalk paint and paint it.

 

The great thing about using chalk paint is that I don’t have to sand the chair and it’s all about just painting and not worrying about all the mess of sanding.

 Goodwill makeover

I made my home made chalk paint with black paint I got at my local hardware store. If you would like to know more about my home made chalk paint you can find it here.

I applied about two coats of chalk paint and let it dry.  Once it was dried I just used a wet cloth and rubbed off the paint the selected areas. I wanted the chair to look used and I rubbed the chalk paint off in the areas where it would be well used.  Now the chair has a little chic look.

I then applied a sealer coat on the chair to make sure they chalk paint will not continue to come off with wear.

We are getting ready for a big move, and I am busy with DIY home decor on a shoestring budget!  Today I am sharing a super sweet french typography Chalky Finish Paint lamp that I made from a discarded liquor bottle.  You will see how to drill a hole in the bottle for the cord, how to chalk paint and distress the lamp, as well as how to transfer an image to the painted surface.  This project is easy and cheap.  The biggest expenditure is the $6 bottle lamp kit and the $15 lamp shade I just had to have for it!   The new Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint is now available in Home Depot and Michaels stores. It is also available for purchase online at homedepot.com.

SUPPLIES:

Really cool liquor bottle

Drill and 1/2 inch Diamond hole drill bit

Small container of water

Towel or paper towels

Rubbing Alcohol or glass cleaner

Lamp Shade

TUTORIAL:

Begin by drilling a hole in the back at the base of your bottle where you want the cord to exit.  I showed you how to do that HERE:

 Upcycle a Glass Bottle into a Lamp

Once your hole is drilled, clean your bottle surface all over with glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol.

Distress painting tutorial

Use a soft, flat brush to paint on a layer of Treasure.  When that is dry, paint on a layer of Primitive.

Upcycle a wine bottle craft

I sanded the gray, revealing the blue base layer.  I decided I wanted a soft yellow top coat, so I mixed Everlasting with Inheritance to lighten and soften the mustard like color.  Then I painted that in a cross hatch, random and messy fashion so that the final piece will have texture and depth.

How to Print on Tissue Paper

To get my image for transfer, I printed some of my favorites from the Graphics Fairy.  There are thousands of free images there to fit any style.  The one I went with is a French Typography file which you can find linked in the supplies section.

Just cut a piece of white tissue paper to fit your card stock and tape it on with masking tape.  Place in printer and print!

How to Image Transfer on Paint

Cut or tear your image from the tissue paper.  I like to tear it so the edges are feathered and not such a straight edge like you get with scissors.  It blends in better.

Apply Clear Creme Wax where you will place the tissue.  Carefully place the tissue and smooth out wrinkles with your finger.

Paint more Clear Creme Wax over that and let dry.

Wine Bottle Craft lamp from upcycled bottle

When the tissue transfer dries, sand entire bottle in areas where you want to bring out the underlying paint colors.  Then apply clear wax over the entire bottle.  Let that dry for at least 30 minutes.

How to Use Antiquing Wax

Apply Golden Brown Creme Wax as desired and wipe back with soft cloth.  If you use too much brown, you can wipe it away even further using Clear Creme Wax on a rag.

Now it is time to use the Bottle Lamp Kit!

How to make a lamp

Follow the included instructions, except for where it says to thread the cord.  It has the cord coming out of the fixture just under the light bulb, but we drilled a hole in our bottle to avoid having an ugly cord running down the lamp from top to bottom!

I found the burlap lampshade at Wal-Mart for $15.

I love my new lamp!  More than that, I love this line of paint.  You will be seeing it in so many more projects coming up here at SBLC.

Remember this DIY Hand-Painted Sign?  Yep, same paint line.  It goes on beautifully, is easy to distress, and comes in an amazing color palate.  LOVE!
