Mod Podge Lampshade Makeover

Lamphade makeover

One of the easiest ways to change the feel of a room is to change the accent colors.  When I get tired of my color scheme, or want to have my home decor coordinate with the seasons, I start with accessories.  Today I am sharing a lamp makeover that is part of my living room color scheme transition.  This project shows that some Mod Podge, spray paint and tissue paper can go a long way in updating accents to transform a room’s style.  The best part?  Save considerable cash by working with what you have instead of buying all new home decor.

Here is how I took a red lamp with a plain canvas drum shade and gave it an aqua base, old handwriting script lampshade makeover:

Budget Friendly Craft Room Storage Solutions

Wood Pallet Storage DIY

This post has been a long time coming.  I originally shared it with It’s So Very Cheri a few weeks back.  I have been dying to show you ever since I started the project.  Here it is, dear readers.  Today, I am going to reveal part of my craft room organization – the pallet organizers!  This project was so rewarding because my creative space was in desperate need of help.

You may have seen this picture in my post where I admitted I had a serious problem…

Craft room organizing

Something needed to happen, am I right?!  Storage solutions are abundant, but can be expensive when purchased in big box stores.  I was determined to get creative and come up with some budget friendly ways to get it together.

I decided it was time to go vertical and make use of the abundant wall space. While driving around and looking for garage I spied a huge pile of pallets at a local Brewery.  They were happy to part with 2 of them, which I loaded into my truck and brought home.

I cleaned them with the hose, let them dry, then I spray painted them black with Krylon Dual (paint and primer in one).

Next I mounted them onto my wall and attached various racks/shelves I picked up at various thrift stores.  There was not much planning here.  I just spray painted the racks so everything was black, and attached them to the pallets like I would attach them to the wall.  That way, the only wall holes are the ones for the pallet.  Everything else hangs on the pallet, and is adjustable.

I got the white horizontal tubs at the hardware store for $1.50 each.  They are great for fabric.

Once you get the pallets hung, you can customize them to fit your needs.  Here are some examples…

I am super happy with my pallet storage units.  The only holes in the wall are where I hung the pallets. Best of all… free!  Yeah, it took some time and effort, but it was well worth it.

Aqua Mirror Spray Paint Makeover

How to Spray Paint a Mirror

Updating my decor with a touch of spray paint is a definite favorite of mine.  It is a way to completely change the look of a room without laying out loads of cash on new furniture and accessories.  Slowly but surely , I have been transitioning my living room from reds and neutrals to aqua and orange.  This mirror in our entryway is my most recent stop on the path to color bliss.

Here it is before…

How to Spray Paint Furniture

I used Martha Stewart’s Spray Paint Kit, which allows you to turn acrylic paint into spray paint.  It was a part of a box of crafts I received last summer when her new craft paint line debuted at Michael’s.  The kit is great in that it opens the color possibilities in spray form to include any of the numerous colors of the line’s acrylic paint.  It is more expensive than buying a can of spray paint, but if you just have to have a certain color, it is your go to tool.  I actually used a Folk Art acrylic paint mixture of white and aqua to get the shade I was going for.  The kit is made for the acrylic paint in the line, but it worked fine with Folk Art.

Martha Stewart Spray Paint Kit

Following the instructions on the kit, I mixed equal parts acrylic paint (mixture of white and aqua) with the spray paint medium, attached this to spray can and used like I would any spray paint.  It went on easily with great coverage and no running.

Martha Stewart Spray Paint Mirror Revamp

I love this color for all seasons.  It can be wintery or summery with the right coordinating accessories.

Sooooo much better than the boring before version, don’t you think?

Remember last year’s spray paint mirror revamp?

These ornate oval mirrors are fabulous.  I look for them every time I go junkin’.

Budget craft organizing ideas

As far as craft book and magazine organizing goes, it doesn’t get much more frugal than free.  For this organizers, I simply collected boxes on various trips to local hardware stores.  They gladly gave me them for free.  If you don’t see empty boxes while browsing the aisles, simply ask an associate.

Here are what mine looked like before spray painting them…

I used Krylon Dual in white and coated each box.  Then I added adhesive scallop border to the upper row.  Eventually I plan to make some cute labels.  I love how it came out.  Now I can see all of my inspiring books and publications without digging through piles of randomness!

DIY Name Art Under $10

DIY Name Art

I was asked to make wall art incorporating the name Morris, and I remembered a photo letter art project from around Christmas time by Shanty 2 Chic.  Here is my version, inspired by the lovely tutorial from Whitney!  I made it using a piece of hardboard left over from another project, 6 Dollar Tree frames, some spray paint, E6000, 2 washers and a rope for the hanging mechanism.  The photo letters are available for free on Flickr (thanks Whitney).

To finish, I drilled 2 holes on top, glued washers over them and ran canvas rope through for the hanging mechanism.  I am digging the industrial look of the final piece.  This is the first time I have ever used the Krylon Stainless Steel spray paint… love it.

Spray Paint Thrift Store Frame Makeover

Thrift store frame makeover

There is nothing quite like the excitement that comes over me when I find that perfect thrift store frame.  As soon as my eyes landed on this little ornate thing, I knew exactly what I was going to do to it, what picture was going to go in it, and where it was going to sit.  That doesn’t happen for me often, so this was a treat!

Here she was as is…

I just cleaned her off with soap and water, dried her with a lint free towel, and spray painted her with Valspar for plastic in white.  Once dry, I put my pic in and placed it in this little vintage vignette.

Do you love the iron grate thingies?  I got these at a thrift store a couple of years ago.  They sat in my closet until now.  Aren’t they cool?!

Spray Paint Goodwill Glass

Spray paint on glass

Accessorizing a colorful room can end up being pretty costly.  Especially when you are someone who gets bored and likes to change up the color palate frequently.  Decorate that room on a budget, without sacrificing style by spray painting thrift store glass jars and containers to coordinate.  The beauty of this tactic is that you get a big color bang for your buck, and when it is time for a change, you can just paint over your glass accessories!

How to Spray Paint Glass
Supplies:

  • Glass containers/vases/dishes/jars from garage sales or thrift stores
  • Krylon Indoor/ Outdoor and/or Krylon Dual spray paint

Instructions:

  • Clean the glass with glass cleaner, removing any debris, and dry thoroughly with lint free towel.  I got my glass at Goodwill on 50% off day and spent under $10!
  • Spray paint with several light coats until you are satisfied with the coverage.  I prefer Krylon Dual for this, as it has built in primer, but it doesn’t come in all that many colors as of yet.  I used it for the white jars and tray shown.  For the blue and yellow, I used Krylon Indoor/Outdoor in Ocean Breeze and Bright Idea that I had left over from other projects.  I didn’t use primer first.  Just sprayed several light coats, allowing paint to dry in between.
