Upcycle a Rusty Grate Into a DIY Photo Display

[pinit]Repurpose Photo Display Idea @savedbyloves [pinit]

Today I am happy to share with you this rustic, quick & easy upcycle to display your favorite Instagram photos – all while saving a rusty old grate from a tragic dumpster demise!  This particular grate is from an fire pit that is no longer.  I just couldn’t part with it.  Round objects have a hard time getting away from me since I love the challenge of using them to create unique repurposed wreaths.

Such as this repurposed hubcap wreath

I digress.  Back to the grate.

Upcycled Grate to Photo Display

Here is the old thing.  It has sat on my porch for months, begging for inspiration to strike me.  Along came Susan.

If you haven’t been to Homeroad, you need to remedy that.  Susan is a junker with an eye for upcycling that always inspires.  When I saw her Barrel Strap Photo Holder, I knew what I had to do.

I used ATC backgrounds I found at Hobby Lobby in a fun yellow, blue, vintage yet modern, geometric patterned, grungy style.  you know that style, right?

The flowers are from Prima .  I grabbed them at Hobby Lobby, but you can find them with my Amazon link too.

I used silver and white baker’s twine with the intention of clipping the photos with tiny cute clothespins.  While digging through my stash I found the perfect Gator clips from 7 Gypsies.  Their little hook fit perfectly over the rods in the grate.

I threw this piece together in under 10 minutes, and I will cherish it for years to come!

Easy Dollar Store Craft – Rosette Framed Dry Erase Board

[pinit]Easy Dollar Store Rose Soap Framed DIY @savedbyloves
[pinit]

Last week I showed you a wreath and bouquet made from these pretty Dollar Tree rose soaps.  You get 9 in a package, and at the store where I live the packs are 2 for $1!  I am having a blast gluing these soaps to various things.  Today I will show you how I made this rosette framed dry erase board with them and a few basic supplies.  Wake up your sweetheart with a personalized message and breakfast in bed this Valentine’s Day!

How to Make a Dollar Store Rose Frame

SUPPLIES:

Dollar Store Craft Idea

Dry Erase Board from Dollar Store

Scrap foam board or cardboard large enough to frame the dry erase board

Utility knife

Straight edge and marker

Glue Gun

Dollar Tree rose soaps

Measure and and mark frame dimensions on foam board using straight edge and marker.  I made mine 2 inches wide and the opening to fit the dry erase board (in this case 6×8 inches).  Cut out with utility knife.

Apply a thin strip of hot glue around the dry erase board foam frame and place your new frame on top of that.

Simply glue the rosettes in place with a dot of hot glue.  I went with all white this time.  That way I can use it all year round, not just on Valentine’s Day.

The roses made the piece to heavy to hang on the fridge with the 2 magnets that came on the back.  I didn’t really mind since I plan to display mine on a shelf.  If you want to have it on your fridge, add more magnet strips to the back.  You can get rolls of adhesive backed magnet at most craft stores.

DIY Distressed Starburst Mirror for $5

[pinit]Distressed Starburst Mirror DIY #upcycle #paintstickcrafts #diy #repurpose #reclaimedwood @savedbyloves
[pinit]

This project has been on my to do list for months and months.  I finally got around to making a distressed, chippy starburst mirror from recycled paint stirrers and other reclaimed wood I have collected from various discard piles.  The hold up was finding a circle mirror, which I ended up finding at Joann Fabrics for just a few dollars.  This piece took about an hour to make start to finish and cost under $5!

Knock off decor

Pretty amazing when you consider this similar mirror at Iron Accents is $410!  If you are considering paying that price for something like this… don’t!  Make your own version for way cheaper, and feel awesome about it.

SUPPLIES:

*** NOTE:  I used a cordless Ryobi AirStrike Nailer which is not a must have, but makes this project (and most of my woodworking projects) go smoothly and quickly.  Work smarter, not harder!

***Oh yeah, and also:  The wreath form on top of the mirror is optional.  I preferred the project with it, but it looks cool without as well.

10 inch diameter round mirror

E6000

Scrap wood about 12×12 inches

Ryobi Airstrike nailer

Wood Glue

Paint stirrers or other wood scraps painted with your favorite colors (I used Chalky finish paint from Americana) – I cut mine to about the same length with my chop saw.  You can have them random lengths or create your own pattern of rays.  Lay out your pieces and play with the design until you love it.

10 inch chipboard wreath form or other circle to place over mirror for a more finished look

Wire or other picture hanger hardware

Paint Stirrer Craft

Use E6000 on the back of the mirror to attach it to the 12×12 inch wood scrap.  It doesn’t have to be exactly 12×12, but there needs to be enough wood all the way around the circle mirror for nailing paint stirrers to.

DIY Mirror

Lay out “rays” to determine placement.  I did two layers.  I applied wood glue and nailed the bottom rays into the 12×12 inch wood with 18 gauge 1/2 inch brad nails in my nailer.

How to make an upcycled starburst mirror

I placed the second layer or rays using the nailer, no glue.  I painted the wreath form with “lace” Chalky Finish Americana paint and nailed it to the underlying rays to frame the mirror.

Staple craft wire to the back for hanging and enjoy!
