Scribble Shop Challenge Project

popsicle stick crafts

How excited was I when the box of craft supplies from Scribble Shop showed up at my door?!  Very… until I opened it.  For this challenge, a group of bloggers are to use as many of the supplies in the box as possible to create a project. I am not sure what I expected to be inside, but when I saw what I had to work with, I was unmoved.  What was I going to do with a ton of jumbo craft sticks, raffia, colored pencils, marbles, glitter buttons, stencils, pigment ink pad and rub-ons?

Scribble Shop online crafts

 SUPPLIES IN BOX:

Metallic Stamp Pad

Dress It Up Embellishments

Mod Podge

Stencil

Raffia

Glass Gems

Motivational Quotes

Popsicle Sticks

Colored Pencils

OTHER SUPPLIES I USED:

Vintaj Natural Brass Cable Chain

Crop a Dile

Eyelets

Sizzix 3D Flower Die

As I pondered the various frames and coasters I could make from these sticks, I was thinking about how I am so inspired to make jewelry right now, and how annoying it was to have to take a break from that for this challenge.  That is when the idea came to me to die cut the craft sticks into pendant and charm shapes.

Here is what I did.

Altered pendant tutorial

For the rectangle shape, I didn’t have a die that was the size I wanted, so I went primitive and used scissors.  Sanding takescare of the rough edges that result.

Scrapbook paper jewelry
To finish, I sealed the rectangle with Mod Podge.  When that dried, I hole punched the pendant at the top and added the 2 eyelets for attaching to the chain.

The rose is made from cardstock cut with Sizzix 3-D flower die, with raffia leaves.  I am so glad I was forced to try to incorporate raffia.  I love it for the rose leaves, and I also tied a piece of it at

the bottom of the pendant.

Die cut jewelry tutorial

Here is the heart charm, which I ended up painting with gold acrylic paint, along with the pink pigment ink.  I punched a hole at each end to add the jumprings.

Home Decor With K&Company Ephemera

Spring decorating ideas

Are you decorating for spring yet?  Whatever your style or theme, scrapbooking supplies can be used to add detail and interest to your decor. Use ribbon, lace, twine and paper embellishments to capture a lovely feel.

I spied this K&Company Ephemera Pack at Joann’s and had to have it for something.

K&Company vintage emphemera pack

It contains all kinds of embellishments, including little pockets, feathers, bird paper species cards, ticket stubs, flowers and more.  I wasn’t sure what I would do with it until I was placing these upcycled tin cans around my living room. They really needed dressed up and I thought of my ephemera pack.  I also had a random birdcage I wanted to incorporate, and this bird themed pack helped bring it all together.  PERFECT!

Grab glass containers & candles of all sizes from Goodwill, and use empty jars and cans from your kitchen to fill and accessorize.  You can tie things together with the oh so popular baker’s twine, ribbon, and lace.  Use clothespins to clip embellishments here and there.  Throw in some old books to vary height and interest.

Recognize the top rose from this paper rose tutorial?  The other rose I haven’t shown you yet, but stay tuned.

Here, I filled a mason jar with sand and placed a die cut paper flower.  Vintage buttons and velvet ribbonas table scatter.  So simple, and I love it!

How to Make a Vase From an Old Book

Book Page Vase DIY

Ever wonder what to do with those old hardcover books you have lying around?  This project is super gratifying as it is simple, quick and you most likely have all the necessary supplies on hand.  I made this cutie in under 25 minutes, beginning to end.  The inspiration came from a fantastic book titled “UPCYCLING” by Danny Seo.  I highly recommend you pick this book up if you can.  You can get it at Amazon for $8.99, and it is filled with wonderful ideas to create with what you have at home.  There are so many projects I want to do in there.  My recycle bin pile will be getting smaller and smaller!

Upcycling

Supplies:

  • Old hardcover book
  • craft glue (Glossy Accents used here)
  • Utility knife
  • Cardboard or card stock for template
  • Pen or pencil to draw vase outline

Instructions:

  • Cut the cardboard to fit the same size as the book cover, and draw a half vase on it.Repurpose old books

  • Cut around the outline to create a templateUpcycled home decor

  • With the edge of your template against the spine of the book, begin cutting around it, several pages at a time.  Continue this until you are through the entire book.  I ditched the template after 50 pages or so, and just used the cut pages as my guide.  It is super easy.  It doesn’t have to be perfect. Crafts using old books
  • When you have cut through the entire book, remove the cover and glue the back of the last page to the front of the front page.  I put a lot of glue on the spine too, and paper clipped to hold together until glue dried.

Saftety Pin Beaded Bracelet

Safety Pin Bracelet

I can’t get enough of upcycled jewelry projects.  This one is as old as oxygen, but new to me, and a great way to use up some of those members of my bead soup stash.  Also, it couldn’t be much easier to make, and looks great with casual and dressy attire.  This would be a great girls night craft!

Upcycle jewlery

To make, I strung 12 beads on each safety pin and ran elastic cord through the top and bottom of each safety pin, kotting the end of each cord.  I alternated beaded safety pins with empty safety pins, flipped vertically.  That simple!  Careful not to stick yourself.

T-shirt Wreath DIY

How to make Christmas Wreath

This project is quite simple, inexpensive, and green.  Who doesn’t love repurposing old rags into festive holiday decor?  Raid the closet or the local thrift stores for your favorite colored cotton T’s and join me in my very first upcycled T-shirt craft!

Supplies:

  • T-shirt strips
  • Wreath form
  • Embellishments of your choice

Instructions:

  • I used my rotary cutter and a straight edge to cut thin strips of t-shirt.  They don’t have to be perfect.  Fabric scissors would be fine too.

Recycled T-shirt crafts

  • Begin wrapping the strips around the wreath form.  When you get to the end of a strip, join a new strip by tying the 2 ends in a simple knot.  I pulled and repositioned the strips so that the knots were all on what would be the back of the wreath (see below).

  • Tie a ribbon or other hanging mechanism and embellish as desired.  I used a fleece scarf from the dollar tree to hang this wreath.  For the bunting, I paper punched scrapbook paper and adhered it to twine with glue.  The letters came from Wal Mart.  I painted them silver and adhered them with hot glue.

That is it!  Are you using old t-shirts in your crafts?  I have seen some amazing projects on pinterst.

Coiled Newspaper Trivet

Upcycled Newspaper Crafts

Beautiful addition to my growing upcycled newspaper/magazine decor projects… a trivet.  I must admit, it began as a place mat project, but stopped trivet sized once I realized it was going to take for  freaking ever to make four big ol’ place mats out of coiled squares.

Coiled Newspaper Projects

Instructions:

Coiling the paper is no different from my tutorial here, but after the first few coils from the center, bend the strips into corners to morph the circle into a square shape.  See in the pics how it starts as a circle coil, then gradually turns into a square?  Just play with it, and you will get the feel for how to do this.

Join the squares using crochet thread, and or hot glue.  Seal with Matte gel medium, mod podge or polycrylic, which should stand up to heat if you use them as hot mats.  I would recommend wiping away any water/liquid that gets on them during use, to make sure none seeps into the paper coils.

You could make these smaller and use them as table top coasters.  Or even make coasters out of one square, just making it bigger than the pictured individual square building blocks pictured here.  What other ideas come to your mind?  I have stacks of folded paper strips, just waiting for me to coil and construct.  I would love to hear your thoughts!
