My Blogger to WordPress Transfer Experience

Transferring from blogger to wordpress

Deciding to move is a big deal.  Especially if you have been blogging for awhile, and are a bit obsessive.  I am not going to lie, I have been known to be high maintenance at times.  I am huge into DIY and take pride in that fact that there is not much I can’t figure out, with a little diligence and a lot of google.  I had contemplated moving from Blogger to WP for some time, and figured I would just do it myself.  That is until I began researching the process and all of the issues that can arise, such as loss of followers, posts, pictures, permalinks… oh my. About the time the process of tackling this myself began to seem overwhelming, I ran across Blogelina’s transfer service.  She happened to be hosting a twitter chat that very evening on the topic of transferring from Blogger to WP.  How timely!

I reviewed the transfer service and purchased the $85 transfer even before attending the party, and here is why:  It cost me less to have Tanya and the rest of the Blogelina team handle the transfer than it would have if I had done the thing myself!  The cost is only $85, and that includes a year of hosting.  Yep.  You are reading it correctly.  A year of hosting if I did the transfer myself would cost that much.  Even I, the type A, DIY perfectionist that I am (see opening sentence),  could not think of a single reason not to go with this service.  I attended the twitter chat that evening, and was confident I had made a great decision.

My transfer was not completely stress free, as my blog was down for about 36 hours.  This is where I became very impressed with Blogelina.  I might have flipped out just a little bit (yeah, ok, I totally panicked).  Tanya was right there, catering to my temper tantrum, standing behind her service, and not resting until she got at the root of the situation.  It turns out there was a misdirection on the part of GoDaddy.  She hounded the customer service until it was resolved and I was up and running beautifully, to my complete satisfaction.  She is there today, always quick to respond if I have a question about my new wordpress blog.  I am so happy I found this service, and that I made the transfer.  SOONER rather than later, folks.  I won’t go into all of the reasons you need to switch.  I wrote about it here, and if you are reading this, you probably already know the list of reasons.  There are tons of posts on the topic.  Go here for Tanya’s compelling arguments and transfer service info.

I have only been here for a few weeks, and I am already comfy.  My busiest traffic day so far is double my busiest traffic day before switching, and that is without making any other changes but the transfer to WordPress.  I love my site design, I have all of my GFC followers and feed subscribers, all of my posts and pictures, and my permalinks from my 1.5 years with Blogger all work!  I highly recommend you transfer and use  Blogelina!

Make sure you check out Tanya’s blogging resources and this Thursday’s Blogger Networking Twitter Party .  I have recently begun taking advantage of the blogging community offered (FREE) at Blogelina, along with a multitude of other free resources.  Stop reading this and go there.  Feel free to contact me with any questions!

I made the switch myself and don’t regret it at all. Unfortunately, I found out how to transfer my followers after I already had a decent sized following on the new blog. I hope you continue to enjoy WP. 🙂

Cheers,
Tracy

I’m looking into doing this REALLY soon. Great review. I will certainly check them out

I just discovered your beautiful blog today…and I’m so glad I did!:) While perusing around here, I discovered this post on switching to WordPress. I didn’t read it in time (bummer!) and ended up doing the switch DIY (with a great e-book that saved my life!)…about 2 months ago. I was just wondering if you do any WordPress tutorials or favorite plug-in reviews? I’m still finding my way around WordPress, and am discovering there aren’t as many tutorials by us DIYers as there were with Blogger!

Thanks for saying hi, Rita! Glad you are here.
I am so impressed that you handled the transfer on your own. You go!
Here is a good article on Crafterminds with plugin recommendations; http://crafterminds.com/2011/10/best-blog-plugins-and-gadgets/.
I pretty much just googled the heck out of everything to get my page how I wanted. I am always happy to help if you have specific questions, but I haven’t put out any tutorials for WP myself. I have considered it, and may do so in the future.

My blog is small and I’m considering moving to wordpress from blogger. Would you still recommend Blogelina and how much does it cost after the first year to host your blog?? Did I ask that right? You can tell I’m clueless. Have learned a lot about working with blogger the last year so a little nervous about changing. Kathy
