DIY Butcher’s Chart Cow Vintage Kitchen Art With Free Graphic

[pinit]DIY Kitchen Art Tutorial With Free Printable Butcher Cow Art @savedbyloves[pinit]

Vintage kitchen art in the form of the butcher’s beef chart is tops in the design world these days.  That is why I was thrilled to score a cookbook from 1898 with the perfect image for such a piece!  I scanned it in, cleaned it up in Photoshop and enlarged it to fit a 28 in x 14 in piece of art scored from a garage sale.  This tutorial shows you how to transfer a large image to a chalky finish surface, and provides the butcher beef chart cow art for you to download for use in your own projects!

TUTORIAL:

Prepare the surface for the image transfer by painting with Chalky Finish in your choice of color.  I used Whisper.  It took 3 light coats with 15 minutes of drying in between to cover the image on the garage sale art.

While that is drying, prepare your image.  I resized mine in Photoshop to fit the 28×14 inch recipient surface.

Make sure you reverse the image before printing it so the numbers won’t be backwards in the transfer!

If you are making art larger than your printer will print, you will need to print it in sections and tape it together like I showed you in the video found here:

How to Make Vintage Wall Art

Print the sections, align them and tape together on the back with painter’s tape.

Large Art Image Transfer Tutorial

Paint the surface with a thin layer of Americana Image Transfer Medium, and paint the ink side of the image to be transferred with the medium too.  For more detail on using this product, see my Vintage Image Transfer Coaster Tutorial shared at Printable Decor.

How to do an image transfer

Spray water on the back of the printed image and let soak for 3-5 minutes.

Rub paper backing away with your finger tips (there are detailed pictures of this in the graphic coaster tutorial linked above).

Seal the piece with clear wax and you are all set!

Mixed Media Valentine’s Day Free Printable + iPad Art Journaling App

Procreate and scanned mixed media are used to create this free Valentine's Day 8x10 Mixed Media "Love" printable #mixedmedia #valentinesday #freeprintable @savedbyloves[pinit]

Today at Printable Decor, I am sharing this mixed media LOVE Valentine’s Day Free Printable.  I made it using some hand sketched elements scanned into the computer, then edited in my favorite new art journaling iPad app, Procreate.

scan art for #procreate #digitalartjournaling #artjournal

You can incorporate your own hand drawn elements via your touch screen, using the amazing selection of mediums for any brush stroke or line you would like to create.  This piece was a pencil out line of the woman on white paper I scanned in (see above), placing over a fun background in Procreate, where I changed the blend mode to multiply.  This leaves just the dark outline and gets rid of the white space.  I painted her all in the app, decreasing the opacity of the painted layers so that the background was visible underneath the skin and clothes.

You can save your files as PSD for further editing in Photoshop if you would like.  Procreate also uploads and downloads directly to dropbox.  Love it!  Super addictive and a great way to journal on the go.

DIY Handpainted Sign + Free Printable Template

[pinit]DIY Hand-painted #reclaimed Wood Sign tutorial and printable cut file or traceable template @savedbyloves #verseprintable #Love #valentinesday [pinit]

I am loving making signs these days.  With Valentine’s Day coming up, I decided to go with this love Corinthians verse, which is great all year round, but particularly so now.  For the detailed tutorial on how to make this sign, see our Rustic DIY Wooden Sign Tutorial.   Below you will find the Photoshop file I used.  The tutorial just linked  shows how to transfer the file to wood and hand paint it.  I used my cricut with the file below to make a stencil.  You can do either with the download.

Click the image to bring up the full size version and either print to transfer like I showed you in the tutorial linked above, or use as a cut file.  I use Sure Cuts A Lot for this.  Not sure if that is still available, but I do know that it doesn’t work with newer Cricut machines.  Good luck!

Mother Theresa artwork

How excited was I to discover that Unity Stamp Company has a new line of stamps designed by Stephanie Ackerman?!  The answer is very… much… tons.  I ordered several from this line and others.  They are full of inspiring words and I couldn’t wait to get creating with them.  Today I am sharing the easiest project out there.  Just stamp, scan, enlarge, print, cut out and frame!

You can color with copic markers if you want, or scan and open in Photoshop to color digitally.

Stamping techniques

For this one, I added shading in Photoshop with the drop shadow function.  Stephanie has a great class (several great classes, actually) teaching you how to shade the letters.  I told you all about it my Marker Art post over the winter:

This was my first class from Stephanie, and I would take them all if I had time!  She has a wonderful way of explaining her techniques so that about anyone can create lovely art in no time.

I love the Mother Teresa quote!  I colored the heart with red copic markers in 3 shades before scanning and enlarging.

Framed Scrapbook Paper Art TutorialThis one I scanned in without color and added the yellow/blue-green in Photoshop.  Pretty cool because I can just change it if I don’t like the outcome.  That is the biggest perk of digital art in my opinion!

I think next I will go the other way  with these designs and shrink them down for creating a soldered pendant, or shrink film jewelry!

How do you use stamps in your artwork?

This is not a paid post!  I just wanted to share Unity Stamps and Stephanie’s new line because I love them.

Maybe you wish it were a different color, or had a specific saying.  That is why I am going to show you how to create your own vibrant, watercolor background using spray inks, and how to get your custom text/designs on there.

SUPPLIES:

Dylusions spray ink (Bubble Gum pink and Post Box red used here)

Watercolor paper

Water spritzer

Paper towels

Stencils of your choice (I used hearts to go with my love theme)

Hair dryer or heat tool

Transfer paper, design to transfer, and pencil (or just pencil if you want to freehand your design)

Micron artist pen in black or other permanent black pen (size 03 used here)

Here is a quick video showing you the simple process:

If you scan the background, the editing possibilities are unending.  Use it as the base for subway art with my DIY subway art tutorial.

Change the hues, add text and images, digital scrapbooking, even use it as your blog background.  Here is an example of a Dylusions background that I hand stamped, scanned, and altered the color of the butterfly:

How great is this?!  When I got my rolled canvas print, I was absolutely amazed with the quality.   The canvas is thick and tough, the print just like the file I uploaded.   The user interface and ordering process at UPrinting.com are super user friendly and hassle free.   At such reasonable price, I will be ordering  more.

Mod Podge Transfer Instagram Photos to Canvas & Text Embellish

Mod Podge Transfer

I have been busting at the crafty seams to tell you about this new product line from Mod Podge by Plaid Crafts.  It includes Podgeable collage papers, Podgeable Shapes, a bunch of new Mod Podge formulations, finish sprays and tools!  I could not believe when I opened the box and saw all of the shiny new supplies:

Mod Podge Product Line

Mod Podge Products By Plaid

I have used many of the products since getting the package in the mail and will show you a round up at the end of this post.  Today’s project uses the same image transfer to canvas I showed you last week, using Mod Podge Glossy for the transfer and Mod Podge Antique for the finish coat, with a couple of tweaks –   I used Photoshop to create an Instagram effect on the photo before printing it for the transfer.  After the photo transfer, I used Mod Podge Rub-On transfers to embellish the final canvas with text.

You will need:

  • Your photo printed on laser jet
  • Mod Podge Glossy Finish
  • Mod Podge Antique Finish
  • Mod Podge Rub on transfers
  • Foam brush or other paint brush
  • Canvas to fit your print (the print used here is 11×14)
  • Bowl of water
  • Dry towel
  • Mod Podge brayer or squeegee
  • Mod Podge Silicone mat, or other non stick work surface

Follow the instructions I showed you previously, using your photo.  I used these free Photoshop actions by Daniel Box to edit my photos with Instagram effects in PS before having them laser printed at my local Office Depot.

Instructions:

  • Cut Photo to fit canvas, and coat canvas and photo with generous layer of glossy Mod Podge.
  • Flip image (print side down) over onto canvas, making sure to center it where you want it before placing, and smooth out any air bubbles with Mod Podge brayer, squeegee or with your hand from the center out.

Transfer instagram photo to canvas

Let that dry for a minimum of 2 hours.  I let mine dry overnight.

Mod Podge Image Transfer

  • You will may need to re-wet with a mister or sponge brush and continue rubbing away paper backing until you are satisfied with the image.  It doesn’t need to be perfect.  You are going for a vintage feel, and you are going to use Mod Podge Antique and rub-ons on top,  so a distressed look is ok.  Just try not to remove too much of your image when you are rubbing away the back.
  • Once you are happy with your image, Coat with Mod Podge Antique, as many coats as you need to get the antiqued effect you desire.  Let dry 30 min between each coat. I applied my the text after the first coat of Mod Podge Antique, then coated twice more to lessen the contrast between the rub-on transfers and the image.  Apply Mod Podge rub on transfers per package instructions.

These are fantastic.  They come in phrases for family, love, seasons, holiday, and pretty much anything you can think of.  I used the love theme for the image of my husband and I.  The Father’s Day theme was perfect for the picture of my husband with his father and son.  Application was easy with the included craft stick.

Mod Podge Image Transfer

  • Here you can see the image for the Father’s Day Gift I used is slightly smaller than the canvas, giving a white border in my finished piece.  I wanted that look, and I brushed around the edges with white acrylic paint.

Here are all of the projects I have done with the new Mod Podge line, and which product I used in each (click images to go to full photo tutorials):

I am so excited about this line.  Everything I have used has been wonderful.  It is no secret I love me some scrapbook paper jewelry, and the Podgeable Papers are scaled to fit those clear acrylic Podgeable Shapes perfectly.  I have big plans there.  My favorite new product is the Mod Podge Antique.  I love the effect, and that it is produced by a product that also seals. These products are now available at your Michael’s Craft Stores.
