Video Tutorial: Make Cut Wine Bottle Vases

Cut wine bottles and make adorable Vases/jars/candle holders. Video DIY at

Need a beautiful, quick gift that is free to make?  This recycled wine bottle craft is just the thing.  It is super fun, you will see in the video.  It only takes a few supplies and a minute to make.  Stick a paper rose in there (see this paper rose tutorial) and you have a lovely centerpiece or house warming gift.  I was completely intimidated by this project.  I can’t believe how easy it is.  Gather up some empty wine bottles and lets go!

PLEASE be careful and wear goggles and gloves.  This project is very easy, but involves fire and glass.  The edges after cutting were dull enough that my fingers were fine after running them along the rim, but I did decide to sand with 120 grit sand paper before giving as gifts.

  1. Wow, I am so impressed! I have never seen that technique for “cutting” a bottle before. Is it really as simple as the video makes it look, i.e. dip yarn in acetone and then burn it until the bottle gives way? Presumably the ends are relatively smooth given it has been melted away from the top?

  2. Nice trick.. Did you have to do something to make sure that there are no sharp edges after you have cut the bottle? Thanks

  4. Get the heck outta here! Are you serious? You mean to tell me that I DONT need power tools? Great because I am forbidden to use them per DH since he is afraid I may maim myself (he’s right). I’ve been wanting to make glass bottle bangle bracelets going to try this nifty trick :) I’m loving your light up flowers they are gorgeous! I have a new trick for you too…come talk to me about Dylusions 😉

  8. I tried this 3-4 times and the bottles did not break

Hmmm. That has happend to me, but not frequently. Maybe one out of every 10 bottles. I wonder if you are using thicker bottles than I am.

  9. I tried this with a dollar-store candle holder (to shorten it) and it did nothing, even when I let the yarn burn for about 40 seconds. Bummed!

  10. Where do you buy the yarn? Is it from a craft store or home improvement store? Trying this tonight! THanks!

  11. I have tried this several times now with different bottles. I only got it to work twice, on beer bottles, not any of my wine bottles. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Any other tips/tricks to this?
